I remember always having a Martianoff Calendar in our home from the time I was a child. I have always associated it with our White Russian historical and cultural heritage. I was very disappointed that this year it is in the new orthography. It seems to me that we have lost a piece of this inheritance by doing so. I understand the church membership has changed to a heavily Russian-born population, but I believe that they should embrace the ROCOR traditions if they become members of it. We kept the faith and the true Russian culture (as opposed to the Soviet identity imposed by the Bolsheviks) alive when it was being crushed by the Communists for over 70 years. The Julian calendar, the old orthography, and the memory of Tsarist Russia were parts of that identity. Union with Moscow should not include the gradual erosion of our historical and cultural identity. I hope the calendar will return to the use of the old orthography next year.
