In the early years of his life, Protopresbyter Valery Lukianov, the author of this memorable book, was under the spiritual guidance of St. John (Maximovitch) of Shanghai, who subsequently ordained him to the diaconate. After Archbishop John’s canonization on June 19/July 2, 1994, Father Valery set as his goal to share the miraculous events of the glorification with a wide audience of believers through the publication of his book, Lantern of Grace – in Russian (1999), followed by the English translation (2004). The book was reissued as an enlarged Russian edition (2010), that embraced our younger generation, including stories and reminiscences of students, altar boys, orphans, and numerous other people from various walks of life, whom St. John helped in time of need. This book, along with the Lenten Triodion and Service Books, was a lovely read for Lent. St, John of Shanghai and San Francisco has always held a dear place in our hearts since our conversion to Holy Orthodoxy shortly before St. John's Canonization. To "personally" revisit him with a glimpse into the canonization itself, which we could not attend, and those things that were such a huge part of his life, allowed us to accompany him through this time of repentance and under his arch-pastoral care. I would recommend this book to anyone who holds St. John dear to their heart and looks to him in need through prayer.

The greatest thing I could say about this book was that it helped inspire my faith in the intercessions of St. John before the throne of God and gave me more confidence in asking St. John for help in my everyday life. Even though I never knew him personally, I'm more inspired to love him due to getting to know his devotion to God, genuinene simplicity and his quickness to help anyone in times of trouble, both during and after his death. I more deeply feel that even though he died, he is alive. I like that this book has some of his own letters to his students and words of his advice to those who God placed on his path in life. Also, I enjoyed all the beautiful pictures. Many thanks to all who participated in the publication of this book for the glory of God. Don't forget to write to St. John from time to time.
