The concept of education and the idea of the university and the historical circumstances represent an obligatory framework for the discussion about the place and meaning of theology in the complex of knowledge and about the Faculty of Theology within the context of the University. This book gives the educational context of the intellectual history and the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Belgrade and higher education of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
The tradition of Western European universities (medieval by origin) was found to be ideal for the establishment of the University of Belgrade, that is for the appointment of the Great School (1863–1905) as University (through the law on the university introduced by the National Parliament of the Kingdom of Serbia, which was then confirmed by King Peter I Karadjordjević on 27 February 1905).
This was manifested in the structure of the university as prescribed in article 4: “The University has five faculties: theology, philosophy, law, medicine, and the technical faculty.” By walking us through paths toward the First Serbian higher philosophical-theological school, the authors elucidate the question what is education?; explore the PAIDEIA between Hellenism and Christianity; UNIVERSITAS from the Monasteries toward the Universities, etc.
