This is the third book of St Ignatius I have purchased and like the other two, this is a spiritual treasure house. It is practical, penetrating and life-changing. I highly recommend this book.

Having been introduced to the writings of St. Ignatius four years ago, through reading The Arena, it is a great blessing that we are given these vibrant translations of the rest of his writings. The Refuge is a beautiful addition that calls the reader to a life of living devotion. Filled with wisdom, this book is wonderfully practical. Like the other writings of St. Ignatius, they are accessible instructions to the Christian who wishes to draw closer to Christ. In St. Ignatius, the Faith of the Scriptures and the Holy Fathers is breathed forth to the reader in a fresh way. Let us read his instructions and be called to no longer live “an inattentive and fruitless life,” as the rightous Bishop wrote. Rather, let us emulate the Holy Fathers in their love and devotion to God. The Refuge is a beautiful call to this, as are all the writings of St. Ignatius. We are indebted to Holy Trinity monastery for making these writings available to the English-speaking world.

The chapter on the fear and love of God is worth the price of the book. St. Ignatius notes that "one cannot love God except with a heart purified and sanctified by divine grace.... Repentance is the ship. Fear is the helmsman. Love is the divine shore." Any falsely-so-called love for God not rooted in humility, repentance, and holy fear is mere self-love vaingloriously disguised. True love cannot exist without the fear of God. "The fear of God is a gift of God....Through repentance, a Christian is lead first to fear of God and then to divine love."
